House Rules for Pulp Call of
Cthulhu
(Now with Revised Sanity
Table)
Disclaimer: My decision to adapt the rules systems I use in campaigns does not indicate that any system is 'bad'. My alterations are because I am very poor at mental arithmetic in game situations (IE under pressure to be swift). Therefore I like to minimize maths calculations in game play. (Otherwise play gets slowed down each time I need to scribble away on paper and double-check everything.) The bump system in HeroQuest (and Action Points), and the Pools system in DERPG are not things I can wrestle with easily in my head, especially when some players have the same problem and so also need supervising. I prefer a game with a minimum of dice rolling and GM paper calculations, so as the story element can be even more emphasized. Those of you to whom mental maths happens like breathing (probably the majority of GMs/Narrators) may not understand, but in game situations it makes a huge difference, and my lack of fluency in this area really slows down play and distracts from the story (reminding us that we are 'making things up'). I have run and played in games using standard rules for HeroQuest and DERPG, and because I write for both systems I have learned the mechanics of these systems. Mechanically they work absolutely fine, and in particular I'd like to say that HeroQuest rules are by far the best official rules to Gloranthan gaming ever published, and that the official DERPG rules capture Cugel-Level gaming beautifully. Thanks for listening.
