Ian Thomson's Publication History

(Significant professional publications are indicated by a bolded date.)

July, 2000 - The 'Pavis and Big Rubble Companion: Vol 1': A collection of articles taking up around half of the illustrious fanzine publication - 'Ye Booke of Tentacles 3'. Many thanks to Fabian for believing in me and my work. And now look what's happened!! :)

The GTA nominated the Pavis material in YBoT3 for the best of Glorantha 2000.

Dec, 2000 - My first ever professionally published work is in French (translated from English by someone other than myself) - Consisting of: Various articles on Pavis for the new Gloranthan rules system: 'Hero Wars'. This was written for Issaries Inc, and put on their website, but translated into French and published by the Issaries associate company 'Multisim' in the official French rulebook. I co-ordinated and wrote a bunch of material, and credited all those who assisted. Since my name comes late in an alphabetical order, it looks like I was only a minor contributor. This was rather disappointing for the first time a substantial amount of my work was published professionally.

In May 2002, the work in English on the Issaries website won recognition in the Glorantha Trading Association's annual honors for creative efforts built on the world of Glorantha. The French material as a whole won recognition as best Foreign Language Publication.

March, 2001 -  Extensive Hero Wars adaptation notes, and expansion material for the classic Big Rubble scenario "Krang's Table". I also heavily revised an old RQ scenario and adapted it for Hero Wars: "Crimson Shadows over Prax". Both published in the fanzine 'Tradetalk: Iss. 8'.

May, 2001 - My first professionally published work in English: the Cult of Issaries printed in Issaries Inc's 'Storm Tribe', and I also made some suggestions for the Cult of Donandar.

May, 2001 - A short story about the 'Travelling Stone' in Tarsh, printed in Iss.1 (Tarsh in Flames) of the wonderful new Gloranthan fanzine The Unspoken Word.

May, 2001 - After some months of delay, my self-contained fanzine: 'The Pavis and Big Rubble Companion, Vol 2 (The Masks of Pavis)' was published by Tentacles Press, and released at the Tentacles over Bacharach Convention at the end of May. I co-ordinated this 'zine, was chief editor and main writer, and felt like I'd just finished a painful birth after almost a year's gruelling labor - but I'm so happy it's here at last! (For complete contents list see here.)

The GTA nominated this zine for the Best of Glorantha 2001.

July, 2001 - I co-ordinated and was editor and writer of new material in a massive revision and expansion of Michael O'Brien's classic RuneQuest scenario, the 'Garhound Contests', whilst adapting it for Hero Wars. Various people donated their kind assistance, including John Hughes who laid the whole thing out as a masterful pdf presentation. (This link goes to the overview page where you can download the complete adventure as a series of pdf files from Issaries Inc's site.)

The GTA nominated this scenario for the Best of Glorantha 2001.

Sept, 2001 - I was co-ordinator and one of several co-writers of a project that created Hero Wars background pieces about the Yelmalions of Sun Dome County for Issaries Inc's website. It was very difficult working with the conflicting viewpoints of the active Sun County fanbase and the company on this project. Considering these difficulties the result was IMO succesful, as I was able to retain many of the great ideas developed by the fans over the years (which had been in grave danger of being jettisoned for the sake of expediency).

Oct 2001 - I acted as joint submissions editor for 'Tradetalk: Iss. 9' (the second Pavis and Big Rubble special). I also wrote or co-wrote several articles, including a large piece on the Zebra Tribe, and revising and expanding Michael O'Brien's piece on the Knights of Jalmar for Hero Wars.

Feb, 2002 - Last year I submitted a bunch of stuff to Pelgrane Press for their Dying Earth rpg based on Jack Vance's classic fantasy books. They quite liked my ideas, and my piece on magical Cantraps is in their publication: "Cugel's Compendium of Indespensible Advantages". The cantraps piece is my third fully professional work to see print (second in English).

March, 2002 - An adventure outline 'The Quergib Frogs' is in Pelgrane Press' Dying Earth magazine "The Excellent Prismatic Spray: Iss. 3". Also in this issue is a smaller adventure outline of mine, credited on the page - but sadly not in the index.

May, 2002 - Lonergan the Pretender sneaks onto the scene - a one page nefarious individual in The Unspoken Word's "Thieves' Arm" issue of their fine magazine. I am also privileged to have been one of those who assisted MOB with his magnificent "Jaxarte and the Moonboat" story (in the same 'zine).

June, 2002 - My 'Pavis and Big Rubble Companion' fanzine, Vol 3: "The Legacy of Pavis" has now been printed.

July, 2002 - Convulsions 'Four Scrolls of Revelation' Magazine: One article on the Pavis County 'Barrowlands', and one article ('The Man Who Walked with Pavis') in the format of a flawed series of recollections (from a Trader's journal circa 910ST). 'The Man Who Walked with Pavis' has won an award in the Best of Glorantha 2002 (Short Story Category)[NB: The comment about the Lunar statue - and its illustration - were added by the editors at the last minute, and don't really make sense since the story is set before the Lunar Empire was founded.]

August, 2002 - Orlanth is Dead (Issaries Inc): Some of the material on the the Yelmalions of Sun Dome County (see above) was included in this publication, so I was credited and got a free copy. Thanks guys.

December 2002 - 'Tradetalk: Iss. 11' contains my article on the Newtlings of Glorantha - developed with the assistance of Stephen Martin and Peter Metcalfe. (This piece was a couple of years old and I'm especially glad to see it in print at last.)

January 2003 - The Imperial Society for the Reclamation of Pavis: I was proud to help develop a fine heroband originally conceived by Bo Rosen for the forthcoming Shadows of Pavis. It found a home early in the Moonrites fanzine, produced as a fundraiser for Gloranthacon VIII.

February, 2003 - A'Pavis and Big Rubble Companion' special edition: "Rough Guide to Pavis City" has been published. This magazine boomed from a single article idea of mine to a published magazine in 6 months. I suppose that's quite remarkable for the fanzine business - it just seemed to write itself, so many thanks to the Gods for their help.

February, 2003 - The long-awaited 'Tales of the Reaching Moon: Issue 20' has just arrived in Australia. A couple of years ago I assisted John Hughes in the development of an article on the Cult of Vinga for this issue. My ideas include Vinga Pathfinder and Anratha.

Feb/March 2003 - 'Tradetalk: Iss. 12' contains my article on Leonardo the Scientist - with the fantastic illustrations of his machines by Sarah Evans. This also is a revision of a very old piece that I am happy to see in print at last.

March, 2003 - The Scaum Valley Gazeteer - Pelgrane Press have released this fine campaign background book. I provided some additional material for Turjan's Tome (not yet published), and some few bits and bobs were diverted to the SVG (hence my credit for additional material). [The Tagline adapted from the movie 'Withnail & I' is one of mine; see if you can spot it.]

April, 2003 - Ascolais and the Land of the Falling Wall - Pelgrane Press have excelled themselves with this sourcebook sized and styled double-edition of their house magazine. My chapter on Lumarth includes an outline of the city of Lumarth and a Cugel-level adventure set in a nearby ruin. My article on creating Vat Creatures as characters is also in this publication, and several short scenario ideas. [As well as including my first large body of professional published work with Pelgrane Press, this book is also packed with other excellent stuff - and so a great buy.]

May, 2003 - Not sure of the exact date, but the newly formed Independent Gloranthan Publications group honored me with an award as one of the most outstanding contributors to the field. I appreciate this because I am first to admit that my amateur work often needs more revisions than I have time for, and my point of view on Pavis is not to everyone's taste. The award helps validate my belief that its better to get good gameable material out there that people can adapt as they see fit - than it is to have a bunch of excellent ideas languishing on your PC for years (and risk them never seeingp honored me with an award as one of the most outstanding contributors to the field. August, 2003 - The latest P&BR Companion fanzine: Shadows of Pavis is now published.

August, 2003 - Issaries Inc have finally released (as they say: after mere decades of delay) the new HeroQuest game - the long-awaited definitive rpg system for Glorantha, which is way better than Hero Wars. A couple of years ago I compared the new and old Donandar info and whipped up a flashy city subcult (Mercario) so that I could play a classic-style Donandari PC in Andrew Bean's Hero Wars campaign. This saw print in the Masks of Pavis, and was spotted by Greg Stafford. It now features as an example subcult within the HeroQuest rulebook. (By interesting coincidence my full Pavic Donandari article was just published in Shadows.) I also worked on the religious keywords for Waha and Eiritha.

Dec 03 - Pelgrane Press have released Turjan's Tome (their magician-level sourcebook). This contains a lot of additional material by myself, including some rules suggestions and last-minute proofing. (I saw a draft so late that it was already at layout - nonetheless I managed to catch some pretty terrible howlers, many of which were dealt with). A special download chapter of this book includes many of my editorial suggestions, though I wasn't primary editor.

Dec 03 - Demons of the Dying Earth (the first professional book I have fully authored and designed) is now also released by Pelgrane Press. [Roderick Robertson - who has so ably assisted with the Companion - has also done the layout for 'Demons'].

Jan 04 - Issaries Inc have put on their initiate site a section from their new Hero Bands book. This is a group of Donandari Entertainers I designed a year or so ago. (You must be a GTA member to access this.)

March 04 - I designed and produced the new character sheets for Pelgrane Press which are now available on their site. Also, after a trip to the Montsalvat (sp?) Writers' and Artists' Community near Melbourne I produced a long Cugel-level scenario based in Kaiin, which they have also put on their site. Most recently I wrote a Cugel-level convention module 'The Day of the Quelo', which can be obtained on request from P. Press by GM's looking for a demo module.

July 04 - I now have my own page at the Pelgrane Press website, called 'Through Violet Cusps'. I'm so far being fairly successful at getting one article posted there per month. I suppose this is in fact the new manifestation of the creative drive that brought the Companion series into being. Offerings so far include a map of Azenomei, an article on cantraps, and a new Chapter for the 'Kaiin Players Guide'.
